Projects!!!!

I'm in a group with jasmine, Lissette, Shelby, Melissa, and Karla working on a project mainly about originality. At first we had focused on doing a draw my life video, then today we decided to switch gears and do a video where we give people the chance to let their voice be heard. We'r going to show videos of different people holding a flash card of something they've wanted to say but feel like they never have the chance. As the videos are rolling we'r going to be playing the song Words Never Said by Lupe Fiasco.

Best of American Lit

well overall I think this has been one of my most favorite classes out of my whole high school experience! :) I really got a whole new perspective of different ways to learn, how to put my self out there, and new opportunities I can take! What stood out to me the most out of this whole year would have to be when we talked about remixing and making something our own. Watching the TED talk with Amanda Palmer really stood out to me, especially a part in the video when she talked about having a concert in Germany and after the show she stripped down in the middle of the crown and let the crowd draw on her body. And she explained how she let her trust take over and left her trust in this crowd ad she felt safe. I thought that was really interesting and even though that was from the first semester its still very clear to me. I wish we could've spent a little more time on the big question subject but other than that this year has been one of the best school experiences! :)

Derby Reportage part 1

  • Hunter S. Thompson outs himself in the article
  • is this kinda like breaking the forth wall?
  • the reporter usually doesn't put him self as a character in the article nd he's explaining his own experience

  • he's very straight up with everything, just says what he thinks, a lot of vulgarity, yet it makes it a little funny
  • he's going to a horse derby to write about the horses, but he realizes that what people are more interested I are the people around them nd their bets
  • there's going to be a riot at the derby? I'm not sure if he's making this up or not
  • Diane Crump was the first woman to ride in the derby
  • he says he a writer for the playboy magazine, has a a lot of tags on his bag to show off or make it seem like he travels a lot nd even has a playboy tag that he bought

Johnny Cyberpunk

well this story was really confusing and I didn't quiet get the whole meaning of, but I get the Cyberpunk part of. Just to recap what cyberpunk is, Cyberpunk is a sub genre of science fiction stories, set around the near future and whats ahead of us, and is mainly focuses on the high tech low life. It plays on reality, and makes the reader wonder of what advances are yet to come in technology and even human beliefs, for example drugs. What I got out of the story is that Johnny is a very smart and clever man, who has megabytes of data stored in him, and he is holding a whole bunch of information in him that made not be too safe. Ralfi, the man the instilled this data in him, is trying to set up a contract with him, (yet e he is setting up for him to be killed) allowing him to get the data instilled in Johnny.  Johnny then meets a woman named Molly, who seems kind of edgy, and decides to help Johnny escape from this "contract deal." Ralfi hires an assassin to kill Johnny with this thing called a squid, ( i don't really get that part?) and now Johnny realizes what kind of people he is dealing with and decides to stick with Molly.  ***this story was really long and confusing so i just skimmed through to the end and tried to piece it together. So Im not sure if this is completely right*** It turns out the assassins go against Ralfi and kill him instead, and Johnny doesn't want to deal with it anymore so he tells molly to use the squid to remove the data from his head.....and yeah there you go :) hehe

Chapter 1 SlaughterHouse Five

  • Dresden was the main point
  • Vonnegut is the one telling the story at this point and gives an out look of his life
  • has a strong dislike about war, antiwar
  • Fought in the war and was taken as a prisoner, Slaughterhouse was where he was kept
  • so it goes is used for when anyone passes away
    • everything happens for a reason
    • so it goes: just let it go
    • you cant go back
  • I was a little confused about the crayons and how it connected to the characters?

Gatsby Essay Prompt answers

Well Im not really sure if this is suppose to be an essay or just answer the questions so I hope this covers everything.

Everyone has that one person who we can call the, " the cheese to my macaroni," or the "laces to my shoes." It's that one person we can depend on and know you can trust, which can also be known as a confidant. A confidant is usually a friend or relative of a hero, who is there for the hero when they need someone to rely on. In the book The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is seen as the confidant, who helps Gatsby in his time of need, helping him get closer to the life he wanted, and in a ways escape his past. With Nick being the narrator of the story, the reader can see direct contact with Nick and Gatsby, and see how Nick imagines and thinks of Gatsby. Through their conversations, Nick was able ot get first hand of what Gatsby was all about and how he was personally. Despite the fact that Gatsby was a very mysterious and reserved man Nick as able to get close with Gatsby and get a look of his past. Nick also helped Gatsby reunite with his love, Daisy, and would help arrange meetings with his lover, knowing that she was married, and keeping everything a secret.

Character project

so here's the dealieo!:o Karla, Melissa, nd my self were all going to do this project together since someone us had to go out of town we didn't really get to put our project together but here's what we might do once we all get together tomorrow....I was thinking of getting characters from different popular movies today that everyone can recognize and each will relate to a certain character from the Great Gatsby nd since one the thing on everybody's mind right now is prom we' ll wrap it around that idea.

The End of Gatsby

  • Nick is worried about Wilson going after Gatsby
  • Nick goes to Gatsbys house and Gatsby tells him about his early life, when he used to be with Daisy, and how he would take blame for Daisy killing myrtle in the crash
  • Tom tells Wilson that Gatsby was the one that killed myrtle in the car crash, so Wilson went to Gatsby's house and shot him then shot him self
  • two years later Nick is talking about Gatsbys death and his funeral
  • nobody was to go to his funeral, some even said he deserved it, this kinda shows what kind of man Gatsby was
  • Nick calls a lot of people trying to find people who will come but everyone is either busy or just doesn't want to go
  • nick contacts Tom and Daisy, they moved and have left no address, nick realizes they are selfish low life people are are just wrapped around money and social views
  • Nick finds Gatsbys father, he has so much pride in his son saying he was always determined and had a future ahead of him
  • the only people who go to his wedding are nick, owl eyes, Gatsbys father, and a few of his servants

Brave New World Essay Refelction

Weeellllll today could have gone a lot better, but for the most part I think I did well on my essay. Once again, I feel like managing my time and laying out my pre-write is what I struggle on the most, because I can never fit in my conclusion or all the examples and points I want to mention. I know thats what I need to work on the most, and also having confidence in my writing and not letting the pressure of tie get to me. However, I feel my pre-write did help me see what I wanted to base my essay on and layout my main focuses, just using my time wisely into making my pre write is what I need to remember for next time.

Josie College

After Mrs. Durkis presentation about college, it made me realize that I actually don't have that much time left before I need to register for colleges. A lot of her information, and websites were very helpful, and to know about those websites and how they narrow down schools to your interest was really cool! A campus that I've been interested in for a long time is Cal Poly SLO, mainly because they have a good liberal arts classes, it's close to home, and I love the environment of San Luis. Although I haven't had the chance to explore other schools that deal with journalism, and I think the websites from the presentation could help me see a bigger variety of schools.
I think the biggest challenge after high school is going to be money, and debt. Even though I know I can get a lot of help from scholarships I'm still debating on going to Hancock for my first two years and then transferring, just so I won't start off my college life with a big debt.

I am Scott F. Fitzgerald

1. I am in love with living large, and feeling luxurious.
2. I am an alcoholic, and died at age 44 from alcoholism.
3. I am known as one of the greatest writers in the 20s.
4. I am most famous for my first book This Side of Paradise, which later allowed me to marry my wife.

Introducing F. Scott Fitzgerald

1. Fitzgerald was named after the man who made the " Star Spangle Banner"

4. In 1917 he dropped out of school to join the army, but he was afraid that he might die in World War I without fulfilling his dreams in writing.
5. Caught in a big debt because his and his wife loved to live luxurious.

Modernist Work

A time when teenagers wanted to be young, wild and free, or where a big robotic man called The Terminator saves your life with his famous pick up line, " Come with me if you want to live," sounds a lot like something you would find on MTV. However, this also resembles a time of Modernism back in the 1900s. A time where technology advanced greatly, leading to a mass destruction in WWI, leaving many people with the thought of, "Why? What's the point if the only thing promised in this world is death?" Experimenting life, being rebellious, and pushing the limits is what the world went to for answers, not to mention, literature. This was a turning point in art and literature, for example "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury, and "The First Seven Years" by Bernard Malamud, two stories that evolved around this idea of modernism through their connection to technology, and a young girl desperate to live her way.

By the looks of it, technology brought a lot of death, sorrow, and yet a new way of life in this Modernistic period. As well as in the story Fahrenheit 451, where technology was their only source of living, yet it alienated the real purpose and meaning of life, where people didn't even bother to look for it. In modernism there where people who wanted to take advantage of the time they had to live, and there where others who didn't see the point if they were going to die anyways. In this story, the author Ray Bradbury, showed how families didn't have that united tie to each other, and technology was more important than having that person to person relationship. The hound, a robotic dog that attacked people also demonstrated the destruction of technology, which came in WWI, and allowed people a new technique of ending someones life. Overall, it seems like death was a new topic for modernism, although it also brought up the excitement of life in some people like in the story, The First Seven Years.

A rebelious, independant, and somewhat stubborn young woman wasn't that common to find back in the 1900s, and for a father this wasn't the easiest thing to deal with. In the story the First Seven Years, a young woman named Miriam is pushed by her father to go to school, get an education, and marry a man who can support and take care of her. Yet, Miriam had the desire to read, explore life, work, and take care of herself. In Modernism, this was a new way of thinking for young people. They had the heart to try and experiment new things, and they knew life was meant to be an adventure.

Overall whether technology brought destruction or new ideas, and experimenting became a new trend, modernism was a new stepping stone to the growth of our species. After WWI, many people were left with this new question on the mind of whats the point, and over the years i believe that the point it to see the world as our playground, and we have the privileged to play on it.

Applied Modernism

Modernism
~Richard Cory:
  - Theme: a modernist poem
     - bleak future
     -money cant buy happiness
-inner world v.s outer world ( not what you think)

~Fahrenheit 451:
  -world/ books/ future  >destroy/ decay
  - montag's though process > syntax
  -breaking the rules/ broken gov't

~ The First 7 Years
  - unreliable narrator
  - rebellious
-Miriam: not typical woman; wants to take care of herself; doesn't need a man to take care of her; wants to live life, explore
  - inner world v.s outer world

My Modernist

The author I wanted to do my project on is Charles Bukowski, because hi poems seem so real and relatable to real life. Also because I am already a little familiar with his work and I wanted to go deeper into learning about his way of thinking, his inspirations, and the meaning of his poetry. Although, if he isn't a modernist author, I would also like to learn about Virginia Woolf. Virginia Woolf was really involved with women rights, and their need for independence, andI believe that was very important for women to take that stand and she was a part of that.

IM HERE

So this post is supposed to be titled I'm here, yet I actually don't feel that I'm completely here in this course. Overall, I know I could do a better job on keeping up with my blog yet I just feel like I have so many things on my plate that actually getting on the computer is one of the last things I do nowadays. However, I have out a lot of thinking and planning toward my smart goal, and it's actually looking like this goal might come true! My SMART goal was to go to Cal Poly SLO, nd of course this is one of the top schools in the state, so grades are a big key to getting in, In which my 3.5 GPA doesn't quite meet the standards, yet I've talked to my guidance counselor, and the Mrs. Derkus to see what I could do to help me reach my SMART goal nd we've discussed class that I could take for my senior year, nd I've also decided to take a summer class in Hancock for English just to get ahead of the game.
This course has really helped me see what I'm capable of, and has pushed me to always give things a try!:)

Essay Postgam Annalysis

Like every other in class essay, it was hard for me to layout what I wanted to write and what order I should put it in. Although I did start out with a pre-write, and it helped me with what I wanted to include in my essay, I just didn't know how to lay it out in an organized understanding way. I don't think I clearly showed my thesis, and I mainly summarized what occurred in the end of the story. Overall, I would give myself a C grade, because I don't think I organized my essay well enough, but I still got my message a crossed.

Parlor Poetry

In the scene where Montag reads, " Dover Beach," if I were in that position I probably would've read, "The Laughing Heart," because this poem express freedom and individuality. Where in the setting of the book this concept doesn't really exist anymore, everything is about technology and everyone follows the same life style. The Laughing Heart really connected with me because it expresses that you shouldn't try to blend in with the crowd, and that everyone of us is different and marvelous in out own way. For the women in the parlor, it didn't seem like they had a sense of freedom, and any spark in their  life, its like they were empty inside. Like in "Moment for Life" by Niki Minaj, she says, " Just because your living doesn't mean your alive."

idk how to post it?!:O

MY F451

The novel Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, is a novel predicting what the future will be like being constructed of technology, where people don't interact anymore and the world is one big cyberspace. Guy Montag is a fireman, who ironically set fires instead of putting them out. One day Montag runs into this young seventeen girl who is very open minded, free living, and somewhat an old girl. They spark up a conversation, and Montag is beguiled by Clarisse's way of life, and he realizes how isolated and boring his life really is, with his career and marriage as well. Later Montag gets a call that a women is hiding books in her home, and living in this world of technology, books and literature are strictly forbidden. This is where Montag's job comes in of setting fires, and he is forced to burn down this women's house, strangely the woman would rather die with her books than escape from the burning house. Montag is shocked by the woman's decision, and begin's this research of books, and the meaning of literature. After days of research, Montag is hooked on books, and has his own stash of books hidden in his house, yet he still wants to know more so he goes to an old english professor, Faber. At first Faber is hesitant to help knowing, knowing the consequences is could lead to, but he decides to help to maybe start a change in society. They spend time learning and studying the meaning and background of books, and when Montag brings up the idea of books to his wife and her friends, things go down from there. The word gets out of Montag's books, and Chief Beatty sets the hit on his house to be burned down. When Montag gets the call, he is shocked that it had came down on him, and to top it off his own wife runs out on him. Chief orders him to burn down his own home with the flamethrower, and when the job is done Montag turns the flame thrower on his own Chief. Knowing that the authorites will now be after him and Faber, they leave town and meet up with the group called, "The Book People." They join together and start a movement to change the views on books and literature.

To Modern or Postmodern

From the quote I think it's trying to say that everybody is focusing on the wrong things going on in the world, yet nobody is doing anything about it. Especially in literature, most novels, fiction in particular, are based on writing about the "bad world" and just drag on the concept of dark times. This has become a common topic in these arts, that no feels they can change the subject, or write something positive and a solution, without looking sentimental or naive. People are pretty much scared of being the start of something new and different.

Spring Lit Analysis

GENERAL
1. Since this is a Nicholas Sparks book, its obvious that this is another one of his amazing romantic stories. It's about a young, educated, respectful women, who is focused on going to school and making something of herself. Yet, when she is introduced to this man who has nothing really going for him except joining the arm, but is still strong, respectful and heart warming guy, her focus on school kind of shifts. They spend a couple weeks together, and realize that even though the stuff on their plates may be different, they still found a way to make a connection. Nicholas Sparks has always been the master to writing dramatic love stories like  The Notebook, let he like to make them original, and realistic rather than the Disney version of falling in love and living happily ever after. In this story it shows that even two people who truly love each other still don't get that happy ending.
2. Even though it might seem cliche, I believe that the theme of this novel is that if you truly love someone of something, let them go, and if they come back then its meant to be. In the story, they both knew they would have to go their separate ways, still trying to make it work, yet when they knew deep inside that going away would change everything. In the end, there was no happy ending, but they knew what they had was true, even though it wasn't meant to last.
3. The authors tone would be romantic and caring like at the times Savannah and John would be together, and when they would describe how you don't expect to wake up one day and think you could find the love of your life, but then they just slip into the picture. Like in the quote from the book, "In our Time together, you claimed a special place in my heart, one I'll carry with me forever and that no one can ever replace. The tone also turns into sorrow and anger in a way, when John has to take his second year in the army, also when the 9/11 strikes.
4.

CHARACTERIZATION (remix!)
1. The characters in the story are very realistic and definitely people and I can relate to, nonetheless, that this is back in 1990s. The main character, the narrator of the story is a man named John Tyree, born in North Carolina, and has had a rough life. With his mother gone and his socially awkward dad, who is autistic, John spends his time surfing, and just trying to get by everyday, believed that by joining the army it could get him aways from his home town, and at the same time be serving his country.
Then there's Savannah, a beautiful young woman, who strives to help others and have a bright future. She definitely sounds like the girl of any mans dream, due to the way John sees her. John was automatically drawn to her when he saw her at the beach, and took his big moment to retrieve her bag when she drops it in the water. From that point on, there was no turning back, they had fallen in love with each other.

I wouldn't say there was an actual antagonist in the story, except the fact that they can't be together because she goes off to school, and John registers in the army. I think time and distance would be the big problem in the story, which in the end usually always ruins a relationship.

The authors choice of words was very simple, and was like an everyday conversation. Since John was the narrator, I think the way Nicholas Sparks had him explained the story really showed John's personality, and it gave a better interpretation of him. Showing that he's not a super genius, by not using high vocabulary, but its simple and easy to understand, making it clear that he's just like everybody else.

After reading this book it was amazing to see how much our generation has changed, and how standards in relationships have gotten so low. People use to take the time to show somebody they loved them, and now all people do is send a text saying, " i love you," and not even proving it. By reading this book I felt like I got to meet somebody, and it was like I got to read what true love used to be like.

The Peeved Pedestrian

Well I couldn't really figure out why Ray Bradbury wrote the book Fahrenheit 451, so I looked through  what some of my other class mates had to say and it made more sense to see how everybody had a different opinion. Overall, I understood the Ray Bradbury wrote this book to show us how lucky we are now to have books at such an easy access, yet we still don't even bother to get up and read. The women who had her books burnt, never let her books go even when it faced death. Not to mention, that we don't take advantage of the things handed to us, and we just let them slip by. Whether that be a book, or even someone who meant something to you, or made you think differently, like Clarisse did with Montag.

Spring Semester plan 1

Well i wasn't at school to talk about the semester plan but my goal for this new semester would be to follow up on my Big Question, which was to find what my purpose is. I think trying to go in the path of looking for my purpose will not only help me push my self in school to be able to do what ever i want in the future, but also get me close to the things I cherish most.
